Low Code Frameworks – How Appian change maintenance into innovation

    • It is quite interesting nowadays how disruptive environments have made many organisations rethink what is the best way for them to interact with their customers. The quickest and most adaptive method is through a continuous process of Digital Transformation. However, their customers are also becoming smarter and more tech-savvy by leveraging various software applications in the market to track the performance of each organisation they are dealing with and comparing them with their competitors to find a better value proposition.

      Well known organisations such as Ford and Citigroup have been introducing various approaches to keep them ahead of their competitors by not only producing more, but innovating more. For instance, Ford has introduced Wi-Fi receivers that turn the car into a mobile hot spot while Citigroup has redesigned the consumer banking experience by streamlining their branch processes down to a minimum using online technology, which now sees branchless platforms becoming a trend globally across the banking industry.

      But Information Technology improvements are no longer the sole domain of big IT names , they are increasingly being driven collectively by various organisations around the globe. Continuing to depend on traditional software development processes to cope with these trends is foolhardy as the volume and pace of development becomes increasingly massive and uncontrollable. The Agile concept has become one of the rising stars to bridge this gap, however Agile as a concept cannot stand by itself let alone enable the transformation or innovation needed. Therefore the approaches to application development and integration need to be adjusted accordingly.

      Forrester Research highlights in one of their surveys that the hardest challenge faced by developers nowadays come mostly from three fronts – integration, UI design and setting up the business rules. These challenges highlight how a low code platform has become more necessary than ever to work seamlessly in an Agile environment. It points to the need to have a cloud-based application development environment that requires less training effort, lower financial investment and enables faster deployment, allowing internal collaboration and supporting quick turn-around time i.e. drag & drop capability, work can be adjusted within the sprint, etc.

      There was once a myth that low code platforms would only work for small scale application development, however one of the recent examples showing that this is not always the case is at Dallas Fortworth International Airport. On a recent Appian webinar, the airport’s CEO, Stephen Shaffer shared their success story on how they automated their 40 semi-manual processes within 18 months and since then have processed more than 42,000 requests and 126,000 approvals. They have been working with the Appian low code platform which has helped them with this massive improvement and transformation.
